What Enhancements Are Possible with Lip Augmentation?

Based on your unique needs and cosmetic goals, Dr. Holloway can customize lip augmentation to achieve any combination of the following enhancements:

How Is the Lip Augmentation Procedure Performed?

To perform lip augmentation, Dr. Holloway can utilize JUVÉDERM^® Ultra, JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA^®, or a combination of both. These dermal fillers are composed of hyaluronic acid (HA)—a volumizing substance found naturally in the body—and are FDA-approved to treat the lips. In fact, JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA^® was specially formulated to achieve longer-lasting lip enhancement without the need for surgery.

During treatment, Dr. Holloway will carefully inject JUVÉDERM^® Ultra and/or JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA^® into targeted areas of the lips using an ultra-fine needle. Depending on your particular needs and desired look, injection sites may include the colored portion of the lips (vermillion), the outer border of the lips (vermillion borders), and/or the corners of the mouth where the upper and lower lips meet (oral commissures). If lines or wrinkles around the mouth are also present, Dr. Holloway can use JUVÉDERM^® Ultra and/or JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA^® to fill these as well, further enhancing the region.

Discomfort during lip augmentation is uncommon, as both the JUVÉDERM^® Ultra and JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA^® solutions include an analgesic known as lidocaine to help desensitize the injection sites. If needed, however, a topical anesthetic can typically also be applied prior to treatment to maximize comfort.

The entire lip augmentation procedure generally takes about 30 minutes to complete, and results are usually apparent immediately. While some mild swelling, bruising, and/or tenderness may be present initially, these symptoms tend to resolve rather quickly—and they are sometimes not experienced at all.

How Long Does Lip Augmentation Last?

The lip augmentation effects of JUVÉDERM^® Ultra typically last approximately eight to nine months, while the volume enhancement of JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA^® can last up to a year or more. In order to maintain an optimal outcome, Dr. Holloway generally recommends returning for touch-up treatments when the results of the previous injections begin to fade as the filler product is naturally broken down and absorbed by the body.
