Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is a non-surgical procedure used to reduce wrinkles, fine lines, and other signs of aging and may be used to improve light scarring such as scars left by acne. This procedure is also known as particle resurfacing, power peel, derma-peel, or Parisian peel. Microdermabrasion is one of the most frequently performed skin care treatments because of its safety, convenience, and effectiveness.

During this 30 minute to one hour procedure, a spray of microcrystals is directed onto the treatment area. These crystals gently remove the outer layer of old and damaged skin called the epidermis and reveals the new skin underneath. The result is a fresh, more youthful complexion along with improved circulation and lymph flow.

What to Expect from Microdermabrasion

MicrodermabrasionMicrodermabrasion is a gentle procedure with few side effects and little discomfort. It is often referred to as a “lunch hour” facial because you can have the procedure and return to work immediately. In a typical session, a highly trained aesthetician will direct a fine stream of aluminum oxide, sodium bicarbonate, salt, or diamond-tipped crystals to damaged skin areas. The abrasive crystals exfoliate the skin, and the crystals and skin debris are removed with gentle suction.

Microdermabrasion is not painful, and most people report that they simply feel a warming sensation as the headpiece passes across their skin. After treatment, the newly exfoliated area is more sensitive than other skin areas and requires additional protection, especially from the sun. A good facial cream can be applied to hydrate the new skin and protect it.

How many treatments are required?

The full benefits of microdermabrasion are seen after several treatments spaced two or three weeks apart. Each treatment stimulates the production of new skin layers, and the results are thicker, smoother, and more vibrant skin.
